“Sportsmanship is not always about winning, but staying the course is what makes good sportsmen.” Pat Downing

The 14th annual MAC 24-Hour Endurance Sailing Challenge took place in Cape Town on 26-27 March 2011. This is a distance team race as well as an attempt to sail the most kilometres non-stop in 24 hours. Registration on Friday 25th kicked off a fun filled weekend of sailing, as well as camping, braais, music and fantastic spirit of camaraderie. On Saturday 26 March, the SA Navy Reserve in true military precision started the MAC 24-Hour 2011 with a ‘bang’ - by the firing of their ceremonial canon at precisely 12 midday on Saturday.

Once more Sika sponsored the Sika Sea Scouts, donating shirts and caps for approximately 60 crewmembers on the boat and on shore during the event, as well as supplying lip ice for all the contestants’ goodie bags. The Sika Sea Scouts boat stood out proudly with Sika’s bold red and yellow branding.

“We thank the sponsors for their ongoing support of the Challenge and also thank all the volunteers, without whose assistance the challenge could not be sailed,” said Mac Management Committee member, Pat Downing, aka Mama 24. “A tremendous 2011 Challenge was experienced by all and the ‘spirit of the challenge’ was abundant amongst everyone, despite the heavy winds, the capsizes, the breakages, the repairs and the lack of sleep.”

In a letter to Sika, John Clutten, 1st Blaauwberg Sea Scouts Chairman wrote:

“Many thanks for your tremendous support at the MAC24. We finished and came a credible 10th out of 38 entrants. Not bad for a bunch of kids! I've attached some photos of the boat we used. It's not a very pretty boat but it sure is tough!"

The results are posted on the MAC website www.milnertonaquaticclub.co.za and there are many pictures on the Facebook MAC 24-Hour site.
