Meadow Feeds is the largest manufacturer of animal feeds in Africa and operates eight strategically positioned mills within South Africa. The silos at their Sidwell, Port Elizabeth mill recently needed refurbishment, and a number of Sika’s internationally renowned products were the unequivocal choice of specifiers William Scholtz & Associates for the project. With each silo soaring to a height of 42 metres, the project extended over a surface area of 5200m². Meadow Feeds awarded the contract to Gordon, Verhoef & Krause who commenced renovations in May 2011.

SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem was initially applied to the silos as an anti-corrosion coating and bonding agent. This cement-based, epoxy-modified, three-component product provides excellent adhesion to steel and concrete, and offers a high degree of mechanical strength. Containing corrosion inhibitors, it acts as an effective barrier against penetration of water and chlorides. The SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem was then coated with Sika Rep LW, a one-component, non-sag, cement based, multi-purpose patching and repair mortar. Ideal for cosmetic or structural repair of deteriorated concrete and mortar, Sika Rep LW offers ease of mixing and application and can be used on exterior or interior and vertical or overhead surfaces. Providing excellent adhesion, it is shrinkage compensated and permeable to water vapour.

A single coat of Sikagard-550 Primer, a one-part, primer was then applied to the repair mortar. Once primed, the silos were double coated with Sikagard-540 W, a one-component, acrylic emulsion-based, high build, protective covering. It is easily applied to concrete and mortar substrates and provides a durable, aesthetically pleasing coating. These top quality products in the Sikagard range are both water vapour permeable and provide excellent UV resistance thereby reducing weathering and ageing – ideal for a project situated in Port Elizabeth. Being solvent-free, these products are also environmentally friendly.

Part of the project involved renovations to flooring inside the silos. This was achieved by application of two outstanding products in the Sikafloor range. Sikafloor-156 ZA, a two-part, low viscosity epoxy resin, was applied as a primer coat. Providing excellent penetration ability, high bond strength, easy application with short waiting times this multi-purpose primer can be applied to internal and external concrete substrates, cement screeds and epoxy mortars. Sikafloor-261 ZA, a two-part, multi-purpose binder based on epoxy resin, was then applied to the floors. Due to its low viscosity, highly fillable self-smoothening and broadcast layers as well as textured layers, mortar screeds and sealer coats can be produced. Sikafloor-261 ZA provides good chemical and mechanical resistance, is solvent-free, economical and easy to apply and results in a tight, glossy surface that is slip resistant.

Due to the height of the silos, swing scaffolding was the only method possible for application of Sika’s products. Needless to say, the friendly city of Port Elizabeth lived up to its other name, with many days of production being lost due to strong winds. The project was finally completed in November 2011.

Meadow Feeds can now be assured that the silos at its Eastern Cape mill have been protected and weatherproofed with the highest quality, long-lasting products produced by Sika.
