As the leading supplier of high quality sealing systems to the construction industry, Sika was the brand of choice when the newly built Klipkruisfontein Reservoir in Soshanguve, Pretoria was ready to be waterproofed.

Wim Joubert from Radon Projects specified Sika’s high performance Combiflex waterproofing system for the project and specialist applicator, MCS (Multi Contracts Specialists) were entrusted with the precision application.

This 28 Megalitre reservoir required 9,240m of Sikadur-Combiflex (300mm x 2mm) to waterproof all construction joints; both the floor-movement joints and the wall to floor joints. Sikadur-Combiflex is used in sealing high movement and irregular joints and cracks where the use of conventional sealing techniques is not possible. It is a highly versatile system consisting of a flexible Hypalon waterproofing tape in conjunction with a suitable epoxy adhesive (for this particular project Sikadur-31CF). It is easy to install, suitable for dry and damp concrete surfaces, is extremely flexible, performs well in a wide range of temperatures and is fast-curing. With regards to its effects on drinking water quality, Sika’s Combiflex System has passed numerous international water safety tests, so is therefore a reliable preference when waterproofing reservoirs.

The Combiflex was first cleaned and activated using Sika’s Colma Cleaner (25 litres), after which the adhesive, Sikadur-31CF Normal (375 litres) was applied to bond the Combiflex tape to the substrate. Sikadur-31CF is a moisture tolerant, thixotropic, structural two part adhesive and repair mortar, based on a combination of epoxy resins and special fillers and is used particularly when in contact with drinking water.  It is easy to mix and apply, is a high strength adhesive that hardens without shrinkage, is impermeable to liquids and water vapour and has good chemical resistance.

The City of Tshwane can be confident that their new Klipkruisfontein Reservoir Soshanguve, having been sealed and waterproofed with Sika’s world class products, will be supplying safe water to the people of this area for decades to come.
