As the construction of the new Kwanobuhle Reservoir in Port Elizabeth reached the waterproofing stage, it was not surprising that Sika’s world-renowned sealing products were specified. The contractor, MCS, was briefed that the requirements of the project were to waterproof the internal joints of the reservoir and prevent the unit from leaking, using a proven high quality system. Sika is relied upon for its innovation and consistency in the field of construction, especially when it comes to the sealing of large structures such as this reservoir. The project got underway in January 2011, with MCS choosing Sika’s high performance Sikadur Combiflex System and Sikadur 31-CF.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had devised a new reservoir design that eliminated the need to seal a 90° wall-floor joint, by introducing a raised kicker, thus making the joint flush and a lot easier to seal, as well as eliminating unwanted risks.

The Sikadur-Combiflex System was used to seal the reservoir joints. This is a high performance joint sealing system consisting of a flexible Hypalon waterproofing tape and Combiflex epoxy adhesive, in this case Sikadur-31 CF Normal. The Sikadur-Combiflex System is employed primarily in the construction of water retaining structures and reservoirs. As a highly specialised waterproofing system, it is used for expansion and connection joints as well as for cracks; when fixed to the joint, it allows irregular and high movement in more than one direction, whilst maintaining a high quality seal. It is used for sealing high movement and irregular joints and cracks where the use of conventional sealing techniques is not possible.

Sikadur-31 CF (35 x 15lt kits) was applied as an adhesive for Sikadur Combiflex (1280m). Sikadur-31 CF is a solvent-free, moisture tolerant, thixotropic, structural two-part adhesive and repair mortar based on a combination of epoxy resins and special fillers. It is a high strength adhesive, which hardens without shrinkage, offers good abrasion and chemical resistance, and is impermeable to liquids and water vapour.

Sika’s products are sure to stand the test of time at Kwanobuhle Reservoir, proving Sika to be the preferred choice for waterproofing large structures.
