When Megchem Engineering & Drafting Services (Pty) Ltd bought the ageing Gert Sibande building in Secunda, Mpumalanga, Corrotech Coatings was its contractor of choice for the rehabilitation project. Having previously experienced very good dealings with Sika, Corrotech Coatings had no hesitation in inviting local Sika Sales Representative, Jacobus Pretorius, for on-site advice on the most suitable Sika products to use.

Originally constructed for the daily administration and operation of the Gert Sibande District Municipality in Secunda, the building had become inadequate for governmental requirements, and being in dire need of renovations, the decision was made to sell it.

The month-long project, which commenced at the beginning of November 2011, involved removal and reinstallation of 3500m of façade joints as well as sealing the building’s main expansion joint. The highly recommended Sika products used for this rehabilitation project were Sikaflex AT-Façade and Sikadur-Combiflex System (2 x 250mm).

Sikaflex AT-Façade, a one-part, moisture-curing elastic sealant based on silane terminated polymers, providing a 25% movement capability, is ideally suited for joint sealing of movement and connection joints between the same or different substrates and offers the highest UV resistance, colour stability and ageing resistance. This silicone- and solvent-free sealant is overpaintable and its excellent workability (low extrusion force and perfect smoothability) as well as its excellent, adhesion to porous and non-porous substrates, puts Sikaflex AT-Façade in a class of its own.

Sikadur-Combiflex System, consisting of a FPO (Flexible Polyoelifin) bandage and Sikadur-31 CF Normal, a two-part thixotropic epoxy adhesive, is a high performance joint sealing system for construction, expansion and connection joints, allowing for irregular and high movement of the joint in more than one direction. This easy to install, extremely flexible system is suitable for dry and damp concrete surfaces, performs well in a wide range of temperatures and is fast-curing. It provides excellent adhesion to many materials, is weather- and water-resistant, offers good resistance to many chemicals and is also root resistant. Although used only to seal the main expansion joint in this project, the versatility of Sikadur-Combiflex System renders it ideal for use in tunnels, hydroelectric power plants, sewage treatment works, swimming pools and potable water reservoirs.

This highly successful project was completed by the end of November 2011, with both client and contractor extremely satisfied with the final result. Besides supplying outstanding products, Sika’s excellent service and advice in the rehabilitation of the Gert Sibande building, resulted in Corrotech Coatings’ decision to make Sika one of its sole suppliers for all future projects, one of which is a 2012 project involving approximately 3000m of Sikadur-Combiflex System.
