When First National Bank in Port Elizabeth was approved as the bank’s new regional headquarters, the renovation and expansion of the FNB building in Cape Road commenced with Sika as a key supplier to this multi million rand project. Atlantic Glass and Aluminium, manufacturers and repairers of glass and aluminum products, were awarded the contract to refurbish the façade of the building using Sika’s internationally approved products.

Cleaning of the aluminium cladding (Hula bond panels) and window frames, was the first phase of the façade refurbishment. This was achieved using Sika Cleaner 205 (50 x 1000ml), a bond-activating substance designed for the activation of non-porous substrates prior to bonding and sealing with products from the Sikaflex range. Once cleaned, the Hula bond panels were then bonded to the channels with Sikaflex-221 (2000 x 600ml light grey) a high quality, multi-purpose non-sag polyurethane sealant. This one-component product cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture to form a durable elastomer. It is resistant to ageing, non-corrosive, bonds to a wide variety of substrates and can be sanded and over-painted. Both of these Sika products are manufactured in accordance with ISO-9001/14001 quality assurance system.

Being one of the largest office blocks in the city, at nine stories high, and with Port Elizabeth living up to its unpopular name of the Windy City, contractors were challenged to complete the project in the scheduled time frame. Scaffolding needed to be secured to the building for the safety of pedestrians as well as applicators and work could only be carried out when the wind speed was less than 20km/hr.

Despite the weather delays, Sika’s high performance products assisted Atlantic Glass and Aluminium to complete this phase of the project within two months, while the entire R128 million project was completed timeously, within six months. By December 2011, having suffered no downtime due to expansions and renovations, First National Bank was able to continue operating from its new state-of-the-art regional headquarters.
