Two internationally approved Sika flooring products were recently used in a renovation project at Liberty Liquors’ bottle store in central Durban.

Leading industrial flooring specialists Concrete Laser Flooring was awarded the contract that entailed intensive preparation, including removal of all existing tiling. Work was carried out over two weekends when this retail store was closed for business.

Sikafloor-21N PurCem, a medium to high strength screed, was applied as a scraper coat (approximately 1.5mm thick) to eliminate any imperfections and to leave a relatively smooth finish. This was followed the next weekend with a 4.5mm thick final coating of heavy duty, resin-rich Sikafloor-20N PurCem, whose textured aggregate surface provides medium to heavy profile slip resistance. Its fluid consistency requires less labour to install than conventional heavy duty modified PU trowel grade screeds.

These Sikafloor PurCem products are both three-component, water-dispersed, coloured polyurethane modified, cement and aggregate screeds that have a similar coefficient of thermal expansion to concrete. They will perform and retain their physical characteristics through a wide temperature range (-40oC to 120oC); a distinct advantage as the cold room floor at Liberty Liquors was also recoated. Both screeds are non-taint, odourless, VOC free and provide bond strength in excess of the tensile strength of concrete. Their high mechanical resistance allows them to behave plastically when subjected to impact, so will deform but not crack or debond.

The fast-curing ability of Sikafloor-20N PurCem allows for foot-traffic after twelve hours and full service after two days. Production downtime is therefore reduced to an absolute minimum – a significant benefit for this project due to guaranteed customer traffic on Monday morning when the store opened.

Sika Primer-3N, a one-component, epoxy-polyurethane solvent-based primer was applied to the joints. This is easy to apply, provides good wetting out properties and is suitable for use on matt-moist substrate.

The joints were sealed with an application of Sikaflex-11FC+. This one-part, moisture-curing, elastic joint sealant and multipurpose adhesive based on polyurethane, provides bubble-free curing, very good adhesion, good mechanical resistance and is solvent-free and odourless with very low emission. It is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications and has a wide variety of uses.

Once completed, approximately 225m2 of substrate had been coated with these high performance Sika products, guaranteeing Liberty Liquors durable, easily maintained floors that will bear the brunt of thousands of customers’ foot traffic and trolley loads for years to come.
