Several Sika products were recently specified for the completion of a newly constructed fresh water reservoir for the town of Villiersdorp near Worcester in the Western Cape. Consulting engineers, ICE Group, and contractor, EXEO Construction, were responsible for this fast track project which commenced in April 2013.

Joint sealing of the reservoir was achieved by applications of various Sika products, one of them being internationally approved Sika-Waterbar (450 metres), a flexible waterstop based on plasticized PVC that is supplied in various sizes and shapes. As the name implies, Sika-Waterbars are used to seal construction and expansion joints in all forms of water-retaining structures, as well as to waterproof structures such as basements, tunnels or subways. Easy to weld on-site, the high quality PVC provides long durability and can withstand high water pressure. The original specification for this part of the project was changed to Sika Waterbar.

A second joint sealant used was Sikaflex PRO-3 iCure (160 x 600ml), a one-part, moisture-curing, low modulus elastic sealant, based on polyurethane. It is suitable for movement and connection joints in interior or exterior applications. With very good workability characteristics, Sikaflex PRO-3 inure provides excellent adhesion, as well as low stress, to many substrates. It has high tear strength and a movement capability of 25%.

To complete the joint sealing phase, the high performance Sikadur-Combiflex SG System (480metres) was applied. Consisting of a modified flexible Polyolefin (FPO) waterproofing tape with an advanced adhesive, Sikadur-31 CF Normal (380 litres), it was applied in varying tape sizes. Designed for construction, expansion and connection joints as well as for cracks, when fixed to a joint, the Sikadur-Combiflex SG System allows for irregular and high movement in more than one direction, whilst still maintaining an excellent quality seal. This extremely flexible system is easy to install, suitable for dry or damp concrete, performs well in a wide range of temperatures and is suitable for many difficult situations.

For concrete repairs to the reservoir, SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem (12 kits) was used as a primer for the high-build repair and reprofiling mortar, Sika MonoTop-615 HB (22 bags). As a cement-based, epoxy-modified, anti-corrosion coating and boding agent, SikaTop-Armatec 110 EpoCem, provides excellent adhesion to concrete or steel.

Polymer-modified, one-component Sika MonoTop-615 HB contains silica fume and is designed for thick concrete repairs. Requiring only water for mixing, its adjustable consistency provides excellent workability characteristics, while its thixotropic behaviour makes it ideal for overhead or vertical applications. This Sika concrete repair system offers a high degree of mechanical strength and acts as an effective barrier against penetration of water and chlorides.
