2021
South Africa, Western Cape

Nestled in the rolling hills and valleys of Robertson, in the Western Cape, is a winery called Le Grand Chasseur Estate owned by Habata. To complement its new lease on life, the winery needed a complete refurbishment of the floor. Habata - familiar with Sika’s products - valued the premium quality, and therefore appointed Sika as the preferred supplier.

To begin the refurbishment project, the old concrete floor had to be demolished and recast, resulting in time delays before the actual project got started. The initial project consisted of the refurbishment of 2,800m2 of fruit-packing area using the Sikafloor®-263 SL ZA as a smooth, hygienic, easy to clean coating. Due to the excellent workmanship by Botwei Projects, they were awarded a second project. In July 2020, Botwei Projects together with FM Civils, began the refurbishment, and were completed just four months later – looking as good as new - in November 2020.

To repair the horizontal concrete floor defects and provide an easy to clean wall corner detail, Sikadur®-43 ZA was used as a coving mortar. It is a three component repair and filling mortar. Once mixed, it forms a trowelable mortar with high strengths and good adhesion to cementitious substrates. It is suitable for both dry and damp surfaces and offers rapid strength gain– ideal qualities to help make up the lost time at the start.

The perfect flooring solution was to use the Sikafloor®-21 N Purcem® applied at approximately 4,5mm thick, as it offers a medium to high strength slip-resistant, smooth, coloured finish. It is both aesthetically pleasing for the winery floor, and easy to clean.

The next step, to ensure the floor maintained a high degree of hygiene, was to seal all the floor joints. Sika® Primer-3 N was used to prime the side of the joint to maximise the bond for the joint sealant. A high-performance elastic joint sealant, Sikaflex® Pro-3 i, was applied to fill all the joints. This superior product has certified approvals for contact with food stuffs, potable water and is ‘Clean Room’ compliant. (Which means it can be used in facilities with the highest requirements for cleanliness).

Sika South Africa is proud to have been an integral part of the refurbishment at the Le Grand Chasseur Estate – our second successful flooring project with Habata - and we look forward to many more. Great wines, on a great floor, a proud intersection of two professional teams!
