The primary material in construction is concrete, and although its durability is the primary reason for construction use, concrete does still degrade over time. Reinforced concrete is a composite material especially used in civil engineering structures for its strength and durability.
However, degradation of concrete and reinforced concrete still happens due to water infiltration, movements or chloride attacks, structural damage, or corrosion from exposure to other elements. This fact alone, requires concrete structures to be effectively maintained.
When concrete is not sufficiently maintained in structures, these structures are often demolished and rebuilt.
With over 110 years of experience in multi-sized construction projects, extensive research and decades of practical application, Sika’s innovation presents a total concrete refurbishment and management solution to:
- Prolong the life of a structure
- Improve the concrete quality
- Improve the protection of the concrete
A total concrete refurbishment solution reduces the need to demolish and rebuild structures that could otherwise be saved. We are a construction product manufacturer that can supply a fully comprehensive range of integrated products and systems for Total Concrete Refurbishment Management.
We pride ourselves in our high-quality products that are backed by excellent customer service, ensuring that the right solution is selected for each specific project.

Strengthening Management
Structural strengthening is an important task when the use of a building or structure changes. This is often a requirement with historical structures where loads are increased, building standards are updated or functionality of the building progresses. Our comprehensive and complete solutions ensure reinstated structural strength, structural integrity, and structural compliance.
The Strengthening Management concept from Sika provides solutions for all types of strengthening requirements.
Here is some more information about Sika’s strengthening products:
Flexural Strengthening:
Often bridges, beams, soffits, columns and walls require flexural strengthening for extended service and structure durability. This can be achieved with Carbon-fibre reinforced polymer plates and rods, alongside epoxy resin adhesives.
Sika® CarboDur® plates are pultruded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates, designed for strengthening concrete, timber, masonry, steel and fibre reinforced polymer structures.
Sika® CarboDur® BC rods are pultruded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with a circular cross section, designed for strengthening
concrete, timber and masonry.
These plates and rods have minimal aesthetic impact, high tensile strength and does not corrode over time.
These products are easily transported and don't require surface preparation. They also provide increased fire resistance once applied to a structure.
Structural Confinement:
Structural confinement refers to enhancing the capacity of load carrying on a structure. Sika’s fabric strengthening systems are fibre reinforced polymers made from carbon, glass and impregnating resins.
SikaWrap® Carbon Fibre fabrics are unidirectional woven or stitched with mid-range strength, designed for installation using a dry or wet application
process.
These products are available in different widths for multi-purpose utilisation. They can also be used on a variety of surfaces like beams, columns, chimneys or walls. SikaWrap® Carbon Fibre fabrics are the most cost-effective strengthening management solution when compared to traditional strengthening techniques.
Shear Strengthening:
Shear Strengthening refers to repairing or improving the shear resistance or performance of a civil engineering structure or building.
Its usage can be seen in:
- Changes of a structure, like removing walls, columns or floors.
- Structural repairs due to corrosion, deterioration or damage.
- Increasing structural durability through crack deflection or width, steel reinforcement or general structural fatigue.
- Increasing load capacity.
Sika® CarboShear L works hand-in-hand with Sika® CarboDur® plates, to strengthen the structure in shear and to anchor the plates.
Sika® CarboShear L carbon fibre shear links provide well defined anchoring and can be over coated. Their corrosion resistance allows usage in humid or rain exposed conditions, ensuring peace of mind with structural integrity.
This incredible product requires minimal preparation, does not affect the appearance of a structure, is easily transported and is easily installed.
Protection Management
Civil Engineering structures are built to serve for many years. However, in our normal atmospheric conditions, these structures are exposed to carbon dioxide amongst many other elements. Once the concrete has been exposed to these elements, the corrosion process begins.
Sika provides a comprehensive concrete protection solution from:
Load changes
Temperature variations including fire or freezing
Elements like carbon dioxide, water or chloride ingress
Once the appropriate renovation and structural strengthening works have been carried out, protecting the concrete against penetration of deleterious elements will help to prolong the design life of the structure.
Protection Management from Sika provides all types of concrete protection using our Hydrophobic Impregnation and Protective Coating.

This transparent, ready to use, easy to use product, can be applied to a new structure, used or already corroding structure including cracked concrete.
Corrosion Management
All reinforced concrete structures can suffer from damage and deterioration at some stages during their lifespan. Although this process is inevitable due to the weather elements, thankfully there is a lot that you can do to manage it effectively.
Total Corrosion Management Systems from Sika encompasses an effective range of complete corrosion protection solutions.
Active Corrosion Inhibitor for Reinforced Concrete:
Sika® FerroGard®-903 Plus can be applied to a surface to immediately start inhibiting corrosion. Because the product is based on organic compounds, it is designed to be used as an impregnator of steel reinforced concrete.
When it penetrates the concrete, it forms a protective monomolecular layer on the surface of the reinforcing steel.
On a new structure it delays the corrosion rate. On an existing structure, it slows the corrosion rate.
This product reduces structural maintenance by up to 15 years, after it has been applied.
Advantages of using this product:
- The product is transparent
- It provides excellent protection resulting in increased durability
- It protects against carbonation
- It can be used where other methods of repair aren't available
Sika® FerroGard®-903 Plus can be used on reinforced concrete below and above ground and extends the surface life of historical structures where the concrete provides an aesthetic element to the structure.
It also provides an easy and economical solution when wanting to extend the service life of a structure.
Bonding Primer and Reinforcement Corrosion Protection:
SikaTop® Armatec®-110 EpoCem® is a cementitious, epoxy resin compensated, coating material and is compatible with most Sika MonoTop® repair mortars.
This multi-use product can be used as a bonding primer or reinforced corrosion protector, in a concrete repair system.
