When consulting engineers, Anderson Vogt Consulting required suitable products to refurbish structural defects at Edendale Hospital, in Pietermaritzburg; Harry Govindsamy, Customer Technical Services- Sika South Africa, recommended Sika’s high-performance products for the job. Spalling Worx was contracted for this project and worked alongside architects Young and Sathara.

Edendale Regional Hospital was established on 1st March 1954. With over 60 years’ experience, this valued establishment is renowned for its post-graduate teaching facilities in all major facets of medicine. Just 9 km from Pietermaritzburg, the hospital overlooks the Msundusi River. The scope of work was to repair the concrete spalling in all subterranean support structures in four wings of the hospital due to the rebar corrosion taking place.

Two top quality Sika repair mortars were specified for those areas displaying concrete deterioration; Sika MonoTop®-612 and Sika MonoTop® -615HB. Sika MonoTop®-612 is a high strength repair and reprofiling mortar containing synthetic fiber reinforcement and used on concrete substrates in need of rehabilitation.
Sika MonoTop®-615 HB, is a high build, one-component reprofiling mortar designed for thick layer concrete repairs. Both products contain silica fume, are ideally suited for overhead and vertical surfaces, and display excellent workability characteristics, as well as being sprayable by the wet spray method.

SikaTop® Armatec®-110 EpoCem® was used as a bonding agent and anti-corrosive coating on the exposed reinforcing steel, ensuring the longevity of the repair.

63 years since the construction of this regional hospital, it was in desperate need of a restoration project. Sika provided a sound solution for the repair of the building restoring the integrity of the structure for many years to come.
